The Chumash are an Native American tribe that lives along the southern coast of California and the Channel Islands. They have a great impact in our history, and if someone were to steal an artifact, or piece of history, our whole timeline would be mixed up!

Over the past years, cave art and other artifacts have been getting stolen by looters. Cave art tends to be chipped out of it's base, leaving an empty spot of where history once was.
New York Times states that, "Looters have plundered Chumash artifacts, developers have paved over Chumash villages, and farmers have bulldozed burial grounds, unearthing bones and skulls that souvenir hunters reportedly have taken home." Many people are angry about this. These bones could have been their ancestors, and by doing this, they are not letting them have a peaceful afterlife.
Sadly, the Chumash has been looted various times, and for various reasons. Some of the items that have been looted are, beads, projectile points, steatite bowls, stone tools, and baskets. These artifacts aren't just something that was used long, long, ago, they are a piece of our history and who we came from.
After the Civil War, looting spread all across the Chumash land, as private collectors and others scoured the lands to find unique artifacts and keepsakes.
If you want to stop looting like us, you can do many things to help. 1) You could educate friends, family, and others about what you learned. Not just on this website, but maybe it might be something a friend told you. 2) If you see an artifact for sale, or even someone stealing one, you can call the police, or submit an artifact tip. We have one on this website if you need to find one.
